Head of Learning & Development

We are looking for a Learning & Development leader to join our Team with the ability to both manage professional development throughout the Firm and identify, and in some cases deliver, soft skills training courses to support our business objectives and develop our talent.

The People function is a busy team where confidentiality, a collaborative work ethic, curiosity and a proactive approach are essential.  The team provides advice and support to partners and staff throughout their entire tenure at the Firm.   We deliver a full range of generalist support together with recruitment, payroll and learning and development activities.

The Team gain credibility through being proactive, responsive, creative and accurate – while this seems basic it will form the basis of success in this role.

The People team currently comprises a Director, 2 Business Partners, a Talent Acquisition Partner and 2 Team Administrators who, together, support the business in all areas listed above.


The role

Reporting to the People Director, the successful candidate will work with the Partners, Heads of Department and relevant Managers to design, implement and evaluate training and development activities in support of the Firm’s business plan.

While the role is within the People Team it is a stand-alone role so requires knowledge, experience and the ability to drive ideas through.  There is some administrative support available with elements of the role.  The role will entail devising an overall development strategy for the Firm and its employees, and demonstrating, over time, a commercial return on any investment made.

  1. L&D Expert
  • Become the recognised L&D expert within the Firm, with a full working knowledge of ACCA, ACA, CFAB, CTA , AAT and ATT qualification paths and options
  • Be the internal expert on the requirements of the ICAEW, CIOT, ATT, ACCA and AAT Professional Institutes
  • Build a successful relationship with the professional bodies
  • Ensure all relevant documentation and guides are up to date at all times
  • Develop and publish/communicate relevant information internally to ensure awareness of development options
  • Manage Apprenticeship Levy: ensuring all relevant are registered appropriately and all leavers are processed with information for BPP/Finance dept and Levy correct at all times
  • Manage relevant pages of intranet
  • Work with other team members to ensure that all have a good working knowledge of development for use in their roles
  1. Trainees
  • Manage the relationship with BPP (the current training provider), leading the weekly calls
  • Analysing and monitoring skills and behaviours for the Apprenticeship Levy
  • Working with the Audit Quality Team to ensure all trainees keep institute records up to date and monitor practical work experience logs and ethics assessments
  • Support all junior talent in their formal development, ensuring exams are booked
  • Manage communication and impact of exam results professionally
  • Work with Generalists to coordinate any action required
  1. Career Development
  • Revise and re-establish the Firm’s talent management and career development programmes:
    • Create/review appropriate and standardised, where possible, career structures throughout the Firm
    • Develop bespoke training schedules to support the career structures and development needs, including Operations teams
    • Map talent on to the structures and ensure they receive the relevant training at the appropriate time
  • Develop 9 box grid (or appropriate tool) for talent and map it with known themes e.g. from exit data, to support succession planning and recruitment
  • Support candidates through the Director RI and Partner promotion processes
  • Manage professional development within the Firm for all i.e. accountancy qualifications and other professional qualifications
  • Provide career development support, coaching and guidance to Partners and staff within the Firm as required
  1. Skills Development
  • Apply specialist knowledge of core L&D tools and L&D best practice (e.g. designing training, leading training needs analysis, knowledge of coaching and mentoring programmes) in order to ensure excellence in all L&D activities across the firm, and continually improve and develop L&D processes, procedures and systems in place
  • Evaluate training needs firm wide
  • Design and deliver, where applicable, skills training courses in-house/on Teams to all levels of employees and Partners
  • Support the Firm’s mentoring schemes with appropriate training
  1. L&D initiatives /Projects
  • Support Diversity & Inclusion training and education programmes
  • Propose support and education on other key initiatives e.g. well-being, mental health, compassionate leadership,
  • Advise on developments and what we could / should introduce
  • Consider new ways to educate and engage at all times
  • Any other ad hoc projects are required
  1. Data & Reporting
  • Develop monthly reporting tool for all L&D activity to illustrate return on investment
  • Report monthly, as appropriate, on exam outcomes
  1. Idea Generation

At all times, your ideas will be welcome as to how we can improve, be more efficient, save time, enhance compliance etc. so please listen, research and share ideas as you wish.  Laws change, market practices develop and generations want different things so keeping an eye out for interesting developments is very wise and ever so useful.

You will have:

  • Experience within any sector, but a good understanding of how different professionals and levels learn
  • Working within a professional services environment is essential
  • Experience of creating programmes and delivering them
  • Experience of working on programmes such as early career/Grad programmes, as well as leadership and development.
  • Able to work in an environment which is unstructured and one you can put your stamp on and carve out.
  • A working knowledge of the People processes within a corporate environment
  • Experience of delivery of relevant training would be welcome but is not essential
  • Proven ability to support numerous colleagues and departments concurrently and balance priorities accordingly
  • Good understanding and experience of key legal requirements relating to legislation particularly with regards to discrimination and immigration regulations

  • Confidence and capacity to establish professional credibility quickly
  • Great ideas and ability to communicate them
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • PC literate with a working knowledge of L&D systems and Powerpoint
  • Adaptable and flexible with great ideas for improvement
  • Ability to instil confidence at a senior level within the Firm
  • Happy to be in the office 3 days a week (London)
