Good financial governance is vitally important for your charity’s success. Policies and procedures should be robust and your strategy should be reviewed frequently. Each trustee should ensure that they have a good understanding of the charity’s finances so that decisions are made collectively. The internal and external environment rarely stands still, so you should consider the answers to these key questions on a regular basis.

Despite an increased focus on fraud prevention over the past few years, a significant number of frauds committed still occur as a result of poor controls for online payments. It is important that all trustees and staff understand the controls in place and ensure segregation of duties wherever possible.

Questions to ask… about the Charity Governance Code
The Charity Governance Code (the Code) was updated at the end of 2020 and is supported by the Charity Commission. Although the Code is not a legal or regulatory requirement, it aims to help charities and their trustees to develop high standards of governance and details best practice in the sector. The Code is split into seven principles. Some questions for trustees to ask in each area are provided in the factsheet. These may be a useful guide for discussions at a trustee away day or a self-review of governance.
Questions to ask… your auditor
When your auditor presents their report to the Board or Finance Committee, it can be difficult to know what questions to ask them. Often trustees rely on the treasurer or one of the trustees with financial experience to reassure them that everything is in order. It is important that all trustees understand the audit report, and your auditor should welcome questions.
