Schools Briefing Autumn 2020

23rd November 2020

As I write this you readers and I are busy working on annual accounts and audits. I trust you’ll also make time to read these articles. We start with Siobhan Holmes reminding us of the importance of good governance during the pandemic and I hope that my pointers towards robust risk management are useful. Lee Stokes reminds you to check your charity’s information on the Charity Commission’s new website.

We are sharing an article that Tom Wilson wrote on financial forecasting and Camilla Culley highlights the risks of poorly designed spreadsheets. Nick Bustin warns that schools which provide staff with tax-exempt living accommodation may need to take action before April. We also include information on Gift Aid.

Recent financial pressures have led to more schools considering leaving the teachers’ pensions scheme and so I am grateful to Adam McRae-Taylor for his overview and guidance. I also welcome Joe Nellis’s economic update, particularly as the current restrictions mean that we’ve missed his entertaining presentation at our annual conference this year.

I hope you enjoy this publication and do contact the authors if you have any questions or comments.
